I had a life of migraines and especially perimenopausal ones as my hormones went crazy. (Our son is adopted.) As with meno issues, the medical community just doesn't treat equally these things that affect women more than men. I had a host of remedies that I went to and developed over time to help myself get through. In the worst throes I would end up in the ER. But I didn't have actual freedom from this sh*t until I found a neurologist who specialized in migraines, who listened and took it seriously and understood. I am on a regimen now where I take something preventative each night (Qlipta, FYI) and use Nurtec at the sightest sign (black dot aura, pain in cheeks, sometimes just a suspicion after a glass of wine evening or on a rainy day). I haven't had one in over 2 years. Living with these is really hard. Mothering with them is SO FUCKING HARD. If you need me, if ever I can be helpful in any way, please feel free to reach out. Sending love.
I’m glad you are finally getting some relief after many years. It is so debilitating and I guess with a lot of pain we just put up with it. My mother suffered migraines and I remember her “resting her eyes” with a cold washcloth over her eyes and forehead. She also suffered pregnancy migraines, as has once of my sisters (the other must be the lucky one!). We just put up with it don’t we? Normalise the pain as part of the journey.
One thing that did help my non-pregnancy migraines was undergoing nose surgery to unblock my left septum. My breathing is so much better and it’s like it has released all the tension in my neck.
Congratulations and sending you strength through these difficult early weeks. I like the “Head Peace” cooling headache relief wrap by Hatch (i found the little inserts don’t get QUITE cold enough in the freezer but it is better than nothing when you have to be up and about). I also looove the “Floraison Unbreakable Stainless Steel Magic Cooling Beauty Facial Sticks” which are these frozen spoons which feel divine - a facialist used them at the end of a treatment once and now they are my go-to source of relief. Perhaps you can teach your four year old how to give you a little face massage with them 🙏.
Congratulations! I really hope you find some relief soon 💕 I struggled with nausea and throwing up pretty much most of my pregnancy and had such a hard time sitting in a car, being around food / people while work was just piling up on the whole time. It was my first pregnancy so I can’t imagine how you are managing a kid as well!
Ah yes driving was hard. I have pretty much not left the house and my husband has been phenomenal is caring for me and our son. He works 6 days (he runs a small business) but was home to help as much as possible and took Freddie out on adventures on non-daycare days to give me some rest. My son is 4 and pretty self sufficient, but if he was 2, then this scenario would have been so much harder. I hope I am through the worst of it!
Again, many congratulations beautiful! Another so well described piece that resonates with so many of us it seems! I didn’t have the migraines so much but awful headaches from the constant vomiting and nausea I endured until about 26 weeks for both cherubs! I can remember having to lay on the bed in our spare room I turned into a rumpus room when P was maybe 14 months old or so, I would shut the door lay on my side and play with him like that for ages or let him play around me. It was an endurance and my best punch in the air, “you got this” to all those facing any of these symptoms with or without child. 💛
I find pregnancy more so this second time yo be emotionally more taxing. It’s probably because of the guilt that my entry levels are low for my son. But as my husband reminds me, it’s only for a short amount of time, that Freddie doesn’t care as long as he gets to be with me and understands what it means to be sick.
Huge congratulations to you Jade! I also suffer migraines which were only worse during pregnancy. If you can stomach it, at first sign of a migraine I would down a fizzy drink (ginger beer was often my beverage of choice) and most of the time if I got it early enough it would do the trick. Someone much smarter than me tried to explain how the fizziness narrows blood vessels to help with pain relief. Hope they ease off for you. Can be so debilitating.
Congratulations darling on growing a new little human. Sending love and ‘darkness’ as I know firsthand the bright light that triggers migraines 😅😅
Oh thank you. And yes give me a dark cold room to incubate in for the foreseeable future. Xx
Congratulations 🥰 and 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻 to get through further migraine episodes 😅
Dare I say I think I’m done. I don’t want to jinx myself though ha X
Congratulations!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you beauty 🩵🩵
Congratulations!! Magnesium can be helpful for migraines during pregnancy. 🥰
I should get back on this… I have found I just wasn’t able to stomach anything. Thank you for the reminder X

Yes! I even had my jaw broken and put back together, which helped me for many years. Do NOT put up with it. I thought I had to. ❤️ 😘
Well I have in pregnancy. I feel I had no choice really. But Iiving in cycles of migraines is not normal… a reminder to stay on top of our health xx
Yes that’s exactly right. And we have to keep talking about it!

I’ll have to look up those facial sticks! Thank you for the recommendations. My son is so sweet he probably would love to massage my face haha.

Well this is interesting! I have not heard bout the fizzy drink … I will have to try this next time.
